What the free search tells you
The Comptroller's franchise tax account-status search concerns the entity's standing for franchise-tax purposes. It is a different system from the Secretary of State's legal entity and filing records. Use the official public search linked in the sources below, not a paid advertisement that resembles the government service.
Search using the identifiers the official system offers, such as name or taxpayer information. Match the actual entity rather than assuming the first similar name is yours. Save the lookup date because status can change.
What it does not prove
An account-status result does not establish that every license, contract, tax or legal obligation is satisfied. It is not itself a filed registered-agent change, and it does not reserve a name. A bank or transaction counterparty may require an official certificate rather than a browser screenshot.
To inspect state formation and filing records, use our existing Texas Secretary of State business search guide, with the current SOSPortal instructions. The SOS entry page states a $1 statutory search fee; this is distinct from the free Comptroller public lookup.
If the result indicates a problem
Read the Comptroller notices and outstanding-report requirements for the relevant year. An entity under the no-tax-due threshold may still have an information-report obligation. If forfeiture has reached the SOS records, the reinstatement process can require clearance and a separate application.
Contact the agency or a CPA for tax-account issues. Contact an attorney for the legal consequences of forfeiture or disputed standing. Buying registered-agent service does not repair a tax account.
