What is SOSPortal?
SOSPortal is the Texas Secretary of State's current online hub for business filings, searches and document orders. The SOS modernization page describes the transition from SOSDirect and SOSUpload and the addition of multi-factor authentication. Use the official SOS entry page, rather than assuming an old saved login still works. This website is a private registered-agent service, not the portal.
Account setup and login
Create or sign into your SOSPortal customer account through the official state entry page. The SOS user guide describes entering your email and password, choosing an MFA method, and verifying the code. After login, select the Business Filings tile. Never send us your state account password or authentication code.
The modernization notice says client account balances are not available in the new system and that filings are paid as you go. A previous SOSDirect account or prepaid balance is not proof that your new portal access is ready. Follow the state's account setup instructions if you cannot sign in.
Start, save and submit a filing
Select Start New Filing, then the appropriate filing type. Formation and foreign registration are different choices; managing an existing entity covers changes such as registered-agent updates and reinstatement. Read the current instructions for the particular form before entering the fields.
The official user guide allows saving a draft and says drafts are available for 30 days. A saved draft is not a filed document. Preview your submission, check the entity name, registered agent, consent and address, and complete the state checkout. Use My Submissions to check status and retrieve evidence. Keep the accepted filing with your company records; payment alone does not establish acceptance.
Searches and costs
The SOSPortal entry page states a $1 statutory fee for each search. Additional document, certificate and filing charges may apply. The free Comptroller account-status search is a different system; it does not replace an SOS filing or certificate.
For the entity-lookup process, see our existing Texas Secretary of State business search guide. When historical instructions differ, use the current official portal and fee guidance linked here.
Before appointing an agent
Obtain the named agent's written or electronic consent before filing. Buying a registered-agent plan does not submit a state filing for you. Review our Form 401 switching guide for an existing entity or our LLC formation guide for a new company.
